Le pouvoir to the народ

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

From time to time, I receive an email from someone interested in translating one of the freeware RW applications. Unfortunately, translating RealWorld applications is not an easy task. There is a lot of text and due to the plug-in based architecture, making a list of strings to translate is quite difficult. But things are about [...]

Documents vs. Windows

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

A couple of years ago, the decision was made to adopt the so called “multiple single document interface” used for example by Microsoft Word 2000, where each open document gets its own top-level window. Has the time come to change this approach?

Push the plug-in

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

The time has come to leverage the plug-in based nature of RealWorld Designer applications. While the plug-in architecture can help to cut development times of larger projects, its true strength lays in allowing people to make their own plug-ins. Picking colors

Monday, November 17th, 2008

In the recent survey, users’ opinion indicate that a color picker is one of the most important user interface elements in a simple image editor. Let there be l…uhm…layers

To drop or not to drop

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

To answer this sneaky question will become much easier in future versions of RealWorld Designer applications. As you might have guessed, this short post will be about improvements to the handy but sometimes overlooked “drag and drop” technique.

Power to the chaos

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

I spend a good portion of my time developing software and only a fraction designing. Still, after a couple of years, I have hundreds of files with images and 3D models on my computer. And to tell you the truth, it is a mess…

Scripting out of control

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

I had it coming…I should have never unleashed it. The scripting interface in RealWorld Designer took a sharp turn and became a lot more than was originally planned. Do you want to rotate pictures by EXIF tags? Generate thumbnails and code for html galleries? Watermark and decorate pictures? Or… do it all in one step? Bah, why should I care? You can do it yourself using scripts.

Drawing tool presets

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

The ability to customize a tool does not seem like something worth more than a short notice, but after using it for a while, you would not want to live without it anymore. Photoshop has a similar feature, but RealWorld Designer takes it to the next level.
